The Police Department operates by dividing the city up into six geographic areas or "beats" as they are called. These beats are typically patrolled 24-hours a day by assigned police officers. Officers remain assigned to a specific beat for a minimum of 6 months. This practice is designed to allow the officers to become very familiar with the residents, business owners and other community members who frequent their area.
