Indio Police Department Grants Unit
The Indio Police Department (“IPD”) actively seeks funding opportunities from federal, state, and local funding agencies. Under the direction of the Office of the Chief of Police, staff members consistently monitor new funding opportunities and administer active grant awards. In light of the slow economic recovery and continued fiscal challenges, these funds provide critical support to the Indio Police Department, as they assist with the purchase of modern public safety equipment and with the implementation of cost-effective public safety initiatives.
The Grants Unit also engages in innovative planning and research activities, bringing evidence-based law enforcement strategies to the City of Indio. Across the country, police officials are realizing the benefits of research-based policing. IPD was selected as one of over 30 law enforcement agencies in the nation to participate in the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA)-sponsored Smart Policing Initiative (“SPI”). In the spring of 2013, the Department will begin the implementation phase of the SPI project, in collaboration with a criminologist from the University of California at Riverside. The primary focus of this initiative is to use predictive policing to address residential and commercial burglary in the city.
Funding from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) has allowed the City of Indio to increase its community policing capacity. In 2011, the City of Indio was awarded a $1.2 million multi-year grant to hire additional police officers. Presently, some of these officers are assigned to the highly successful School Resource Officer (SRO) program.
