Indio is proud to have its own municipal Police Department comprised of the Police Administration and three main Divisions: Field Services, Special Services, and Support Services.
The Department is functionally arranged into eight major categories: 1) Police Administration, 2) Police Field Services, 3) Police Special Services, 4) Police Support Services, 5) Animal Control, 6) Community Improvement, 7) Traffic Enforcement, and 8) Parking Enforcement.

Police
Administration is primary responsible for planning, organizing,
staffing, directing, budgeting, reporting and administratively
coordinating overall Department responsibilities. (from left

PATROL
AND TRAFFIC
The
Police Field Services Division is supervised by one Division
Commander and four Patrol Sergeants. This Division is primarily
comprised of sworn and non-sworn uniformed personnel who work
shifts or “watches” and are assigned into geographical
areas based upon workloads. Field Services includes oversight
of Patrol, Communications Center, School Resource Officer,
Reserve Officer program, Field Training Officer program, Internal
Affairs and the Problem Oriented Policing Unit.
Parking
Control, under the direction of the Field Services Division,
is responsible for enforcing City of Indio Municipal Code
and/or California Vehicle Codes that regulate the parking
of motor vehicles. The enforcement process utilizes part-time
Community Service Officers whose primary task is to issue
citations to those who violate parking regulations.
Community
Improvement, which is supervised by a Commander and a Sergeant,
strives to create pride in the City of Indio by maintaining
an attractive community that quickly and courteously identifies
and processes code violations resulting in timely case closures
and a blight free community.The Code Enforcement Unit enforces
city code violations that are blight issues or hazards that
are seen by public view or reported to code enforcement.P
ersonnel assigned to this program are responsible for investigating
city code violations, seeking compliance via education and
enforcement efforts up to and including civil/criminal prosecutions.
The
Indio Air Support Division provides air support services
to the Indio Police Department, including: traffic control,
emergency transport and air patrol services.
The Department has four (4) police canines: INDY, PAL,
ROTAR, and ROCCO which enables it to field a police canine on duty
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The
Police Special Services Division is supervised by a Bureau
Commander, who is assisted by a three Sergeants. The Special
Services Bureau is comprised of Investigations, Property-Evidence,
Records, Background Investigations, Training, Professional
Standards, Volunteer Personnel, CHIPS. (Citizens Helping in
Policing Services), Police Cadets, Neighborhood Watch, Crime
Analysis, and Public Relations.
The City of Indio
assumed responsibility for operation of the County of Riverside
Animal Shelter on January 17, 2006. The shelter reopened as the
ANIMAL CARE CENTER OF INDIO on July 8, 2006. Our goal is to find
every adoptable animal a loving home. The Animal Care Center was
created to service the residents of Indio. Although, animals may
be adopted by residents from other communities the Care Center
only receives animals from within INDIO CITY LIMITS. For all

The
Public Relations officer has liaison duties associated with
the Indio Youth Task Force Executive Board for purposes of
assisting with organizing, planning, and implementing youth
events. The mission of the IYTF is to foster extensive networking
with several county agencies, youth organizations and service
providers for the purpose of Juvenile Intervention and Education.
